Reflecting on a Quarter Century of Hope and Healing at Quest for Life

    Dec 4, 2024 | Blog Articles

This year marks an extraordinary milestone for the Quest for Life Foundation. 25 years ago, we opened our doors in the serene village of Bundanoon, offering a dedicated sanctuary for healing, solace, and hope. Since that time, thousands of lives have been touched through our programs, and even before settling in Bundanoon, countless more were supported through community workshops, support groups and residential retreats in venues across the country. 🌿

Our mission extends beyond the boundaries of our centre. Over the years, our facilitators have carried the teachings of Quest into isolated and disaster-affected communities, offering support during times of drought, bushfires, and floods. Each of these efforts has been made possible because of the generosity and compassion of people like you.

When we first established our base in Bundanoon in 1998, it was a dream come true. Thanks to the heartfelt support of Geoff and Clare Loudon, our original benefactors, we were able to create a space where people could find the help and understanding they so desperately needed. Geoff and Clare were inspired to support Quest after their hearts were touched by the profound healing experienced by their friends who attended our programs. Their unwavering commitment to our work continues to inspire us today. 🌟

We could never have imagined just how much Quest would grow over the years, branching into areas we hadn’t anticipated. What has remained constant, however, is our dedication to helping people face life’s most significant challenges with courage and hope. By donating to our Christmas Appeal, you’re giving people healing and peace of mind.

At Quest, we prefer to ask people, “Do you feel as good as you look?” rather than, “You look well” - which may convey the message, “I’ve decided that if you look OK, you are OK!” When people comment on our appearance, which is completely at odds with how we feel, it can add to our sense of isolation or loneliness.

When people walk through our doors, they often carry heavy burdens of grief, trauma, illness, or despair. For many, their struggles remain hidden beneath the surface, unspoken and unknown even to those closest to them. They don’t know who to trust or that help or understanding will be forthcoming if they do reach out. Far too many participants tell us that they’ve contemplated suicide as their only option. We are so grateful that they make a call to Quest to attend a program. 🙏

It takes great courage to heal and to make meaning of our lives when people have been shattered by loss, violence, trauma or life-challenging illness. It’s not uncommon for participants to arrive feeling anxious, unsure, and exhausted from their journeys - both physical and emotional.

The moment they step into the Quest for Life Centre, a sense of relief often washes over them. Whether they are greeted at the Bundanoon train station by our friendly staff or welcomed at the door by our team, they begin to sense that they’ve found a safe place - a place where they can focus on their own healing without judgment or expectation. It’s not at all uncommon for people to dissolve into tears of relief on arrival, as they feel they’re finally able to focus on their own needs.

Crystal, a recent program participant, put it beautifully when she said:

“From the moment I walked up the driveway, I felt the intense energy of the surrounds. It has been the most extraordinary experience of my life and I feel so privileged to be able to be a part of something life-changing. The kindness and support offered by all the staff at Quest has made a huge impact on my healing journey. My tastebuds are going to be disappointed when I go home! Thank you for all you do – it matters!"

For some, this is the first time they’ve shared their inner turmoil with anyone. It always touches me deeply that people travel so far, to find a safe place in which they can utter the un-utterable, and have their story witnessed and acknowledged by people they don’t know.

While each program brings together a group of strangers, all of whom are living with various life challenges including tragedy, grief, illness, trauma, depression, PTSD or anxiety, their shared suffering forges a strong bond of compassion, empathy and respect. Indeed, many have formed friendships for life, and we’ve even had a couple of marriages between participants who met on a Quest program! 💖

Of course, past participants arrive feeling delighted and excited by the prospect of continuing their healing journey. They already know how helpful the program will be - not to mention our dedicated teams, our delicious meals and the tranquil grounds.

The feedback we receive after each program reaffirms the importance of the work we do. Participants consistently share how their lives have been transformed - not just during their time at Quest but long after, as they apply the tools and insights they’ve gained.

Mark, who recently joined us for a Quest for Life program, shared his gratitude:

The facilitators were very compassionate, loving and caring. The program has given me awareness and strategies that I can implement in my life, to make me more mindful of why I am here on this earth and to cope with the difficulties that I have."

Our commitment to aftercare ensures that participants continue to feel supported, so their quality of life continues to improve as they implement the education they received. Through our online offerings, including my Monday meditations and our facilitators’ educational chats, we provide ongoing connection and community for those navigating life’s challenges.

Many of the people who attend our programs are facing not only emotional and physical hardships, but also financial strain. Your donations make it possible for us to extend a hand to those in need, ensuring that no one is turned away due to their circumstances. It is through your compassion for humanity and your generosity that we’re able to accommodate everyone in need of our services. 💫

Have you ever had your life touched by the kindness of a stranger? I have. Forty years ago, Padre Ilarino offered me refuge at the Eremo delle Carceri, a safe haven during a time of deep need. His generosity left an indelible mark on my life, much like the mark your contributions leave on the lives of those who come to Quest seeking hope and healing.
