Important Note
Quest for Life is not a detox or addiction recovery facility. We are an alcohol and drug-free Centre. Participants must be free from substance use before attending our residential programs. We understand that the root cause of addiction is often unresolved trauma, emotional pain or chronic stress. Our programs provide tools for healing, resilience and personal transformation, supporting people who are committed to recovery.
Are you struggling with addiction or substance abuse?
Addiction can feel like a relentless cycle — the shame, the cravings, the secrecy, and the deep sense of isolation. You may feel exhausted from trying to stop. Or perhaps you're watching someone you care about struggle deeply and feeling powerless to help.
At Quest for Life, we understand that addiction is not a moral failing. It's a complex condition, often rooted in trauma, emotional pain or the inability to manage life’s challenges. With compassion, practical tools and a safe, supportive environment, recovery, hope for the future, and a purposeful life are possible.
What is addiction?
Addiction is a strong physical or psychological need to engage in a behaviour or use a substance (substance abuse) — even when it causes harm. It often begins as a way to feel good, or to escape stress, sadness, grief, pain or trauma. The relief or pleasure is temporary, but the desire to repeat it can grow.
Addiction changes how the brain functions, especially the parts that regulate reward and pleasure. Over time, more of the substance or behaviour is needed to achieve the same effect, and stopping can lead to distress or physical withdrawal symptoms.
Types of addiction include:
- Substance addictions: alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs, prescription medications
- Behavioural (non-substance) addictions: gambling, gaming, shopping, eating, sex, pornography, smartphone or internet use.
Addiction becomes a problem when what once brought temporary comfort becomes a source of pain. The consequences often ripple out — impacting health, relationships, finances and overall wellbeing.
Signs and Symptoms of Addiction
Addiction is often marked by a loss of control, persistent use despite harm, and neglect of responsibilities. Common signs include:
- Using a substance or behaviour to cope with stress, anxiety or low mood
- Difficulty stopping or cutting down, despite a desire to do so; or feeling unwell when you do
- Feeling guilty or ashamed
- Hiding behaviours from others
- Neglecting responsibilities at work, school or home
- Spending excessive time or money on the coping strategy or pattern
- Taking more risks than usual
- Health issues, including sleep, appetite or weight changes
- Mood swings or emotional instability
- Relationship breakdowns or increased conflict.
And if you're supporting someone with addiction, you may feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or unsure how to help without losing yourself in the process.

Support Options and Treatment
At Quest for Life, we recognise that healing is a deeply personal journey. You are the expert in your own life, and we honour your readiness, your pace, and your choices.
Your doctor can help assess the situation, discuss options and guide you toward the right support. You can also call the Australian Government service Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 at any time to speak to a registered nurse.
At Quest, we support people affected by addiction by providing tools to heal trauma, regulate emotions, and reconnect with life. Our immersive residential programs Healing Your Life and Moving Beyond Trauma don’t treat addiction directly, but they offer a powerful, trauma-informed foundation for long-term wellbeing.
What Quest does is show you a toolbox, and the toolbox is all sorts of things that are going to be helpful to get you through the challenges that you face. - Nina
Factors contributing to a positive healing outcome
- Explore the roots. If addiction has been a response to overwhelming experiences or unresolved emotional pain, healing begins by gently exploring these underlying wounds. You don’t have to do this alone — support is available.
- Notice your triggers. Pay attention to the people, places, situations or emotions that lead to cravings. Recognising your triggers helps you plan ahead and choose differently.
- Take care of your body and mind. Eating regular meals, getting enough rest, staying hydrated and practising relaxation techniques all support physical and emotional wellbeing.
- Find healthier ways to cope. Try activities that ease stress and lift your mood, such as walking, journalling, painting, cooking, or spending time with people who make you feel safe.
- Pause and distract. When cravings show up, set a timer for 10 minutes and try something else — go for a walk, listen to music, call a friend, or change your environment.
- Meditate. Regular meditation can help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings, reduce reactivity, and create a sense of calm and clarity in moments of stress.
- Try helpful tools. Recovery apps, guided meditations, or practical frameworks can support consistency and help track your progress.
- Have a support system in place. Whether it’s a therapist, peer group, sponsor or mentor, connection helps reduce isolation and keeps you accountable.
- Commit to ongoing growth. A willingness to explore emotional pain, develop self-awareness, and apply new strategies strengthens the foundation for lasting change.
