What is Coercive Control?
Coercive control is a deeply harmful form of domestic abuse characterised by a pattern of behaviours used by one person - the abuser - to dominate and manipulate another - the victim. Unlike physical violence, coercive control is often subtle, persistent, and psychological – making it harder to detect and even harder to escape.
Victims of coercive control can lose their sense of identity, independence, and self-worth, often without realising they are being abused. This form of control may happen behind closed doors, but its impact is profound and long-lasting.
Common Tactics of Coercive Control
Coercive control can take many forms, including:
- Manipulation and Gaslighting: The abuser distorts reality to confuse the victim, making them doubt their own memories, feelings, or instincts.
- Isolation: The victim is gradually cut off from family, friends, and support networks, making it challenging to seek help.
- Surveillance and Monitoring: The abuser may track the victim’s phone, emails, social media, or even physical movements to exert control.
- Financial Control: Controlling access to money, preventing work, or closely monitoring the victim's spending.
- Threats and Intimidation: Using fear—whether through implied threats, aggression, or harm to loved ones—to maintain dominance
Signs and Symptoms of Coercive Control
Recognising the symptoms of coercive control is crucial for seeking help and breaking free. While the signs can be subtle and vary between individuals, they generally involve a consistent pattern of behaviours aimed at undermining the victim's independence and wellbeing.
Here are some common symptoms to watch for:
- Feeling Trapped: Victims may believe they can’t leave the relationship due to fear, financial dependency, or concern for children or pets
- Emotional and Psychological Distress: Ongoing anxiety, fear, or depression. Victims may feel like they’re “walking on eggshells.” They may feel constantly on edge, worried about how their abuser will react to their actions.
- Isolation from Support Systems: The abuser may systematically cut off their victim from friends, family, and other sources of support, making it difficult for them to seek help or confide in others. This isolation reinforces the abuser's control.
- Withdrawal from Others: Victims may become unusually withdrawn or reluctant to speak about their relationship.
- Loss of Autonomy: Victims may find themselves needing to ask permission for basic activities, such as meeting friends, making purchases, or even leaving the house. Personal freedom is restricted.
- Lack of Financial Control: The abuser may control financial resources, limiting the victim's access to money and economic independence. This can include restricting the victim's ability to work or monitoring and controlling their spending.
- Changes in Personality or Appearance: Victims may become more subdued or alter how they dress or behave to avoid upsetting the abuser. They may seem unusually submissive or compliant in the presence of the abuser.
- Constant Self-Doubt or Paranoia: Victims may question their memory or perception of events due to gaslighting. Psychological manipulation erodes a victim's self-confidence and sense of reality.
