Who Am I Now? Embracing Change After a Challenge or Diagnosis

    Mar 17, 2025 | Blog Articles

Life has a way of throwing curveballs and when you least expect it, you can find yourself dealing illness, loss, or personal upheaval. When this happens, it can feel like you are standing at a crossroads, looking back at the version of life and yourself so far and experiencing a different version of yourself now that feels unfamiliar.

The Question of Identity in Times of Change

Often the question arises in these moments “Who am I now?”  There can be great discomfort in change and yet it is often through a challenge, a diagnosis, or a loss, that you are catapulted towards change. At Quest for Life residential programs, we find that many participants experience feelings of grief and loss – loss of their dream or grieving the version of themselves that no longer exists. There can also be a sense of mourning lost abilities, roles, or the way life used to be.

It can feel like one door has closed and there is another door there, but you are uncertain if you should open it or if you do, there can be fear around what’s next. This transitional period can feel unsettling, like you are in that in-between space where the old identity no longer fits, but the new version of you is unclear.

    Ways to Embrace Change

Life can change unexpectedly, leaving you grappling with illness, loss, or upheaval. In these moments, you may ask, “Who am I now?” At Quest for Life, we see many participants grieving lost dreams, abilities, or identities. It can feel like one door has closed, and uncertainty surrounds what comes next. If you're facing this transition, know that support is available. Here are some ways to embrace change:

    • Acknowledge Your Emotions – Allow yourself to feel grief, fear, or frustration without judgment.
    • Reframe Your Perspective – Shift focus from loss to new possibilities.
    • Practice Self-Compassion – Be kind to yourself as you adjust.
    • Seek Support – Connect with loved ones or professional guidance.
    • Take Small Steps – Engage in activities that bring meaning.
    • Prioritise Self-Care – Nurture your wellbeing with rest, nature, and mindfulness.
    • Find Purpose – Explore what gives your life meaning now.
    • Learn Coping Strategies – Techniques like mindfulness can ease the transition.

Change is challenging, but it can also be an opportunity for growth. If you find yourself asking the question “who am I now?" and can relate to these feelings of grief and loss, please know that there is support for you. At Quest for Life, we provide a compassionate space to help you navigate this journey with confidence and peace. You are not alone.
